Immigration raid sees 44 undocumented migrants nabbed in Negri

SEREMBAN: The Immigration Department has detained 44 undocumented foreigners in an operation in Nilai 3 near here, says its state director Kennith Tan Ai Kiang.

He said a total of 149 foreigners were screened during the operation carried out at 22 residential and commercial premises on March 18 and 19.

"The 44 detained had violated provisions related to Immigration laws and regulations.

"They have since been sent to the Immigration depot in Lenggeng to allow us to continue with investigations," he said in a statement.

Tan said 19 of those detained were Bangladeshis followed by Indonesians (15), Nepalese (nine) and Sri Lanka (one).

Of the 15 Indonesians, six were women.

Those detained were between 24 and 48 years old.

"Some tried to escape upon realising our presence but we managed to apprehend them," he said.

Tan said eight employers and caretakers of premises have also been asked to be present at the Immigration Department to assist in investigations.

"We would again like to remind employers not to hire undocumented foreigners as stern action can be taken against them for doing so," he said.

He also thanked the public for the tip which led to the arrest of the undocumented foreigners.
