Attempt to smuggle 10.79kg of syabu foiled by Sabah Customs

KOTA KINABALU: An attempt to smuggle drugs via a transport company service in Sabah's east coast Tawau district was foiled when Customs officers recovered 10.79kg of syabu wrapped inside a box labelled as "fishing equipment".

Sabah Customs Department assistant director Datuk Mohd Nasir Deraman told a press conference Monday (March 18) that they found the syabu packed into 10 plastic packages labelled "168 Freeso-Dried Durian" inside the box.

He said the syabu had a street value of about RM356,070.

According to Mohd Nasir, Customs had received a tip about drugs being smuggled via a transport company at Jalan Bakau in Tawau, and subsequently raided the premises at about noon on March 9.

Mohd Nasir said the modus operandi of the syndicate was to bring the drugs using the courier service by road from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau, and would put "self collection" as the recipient's address to avoid detection.

He said they had detained the manager of the transport company to assist in investigations under the Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
