Porsche crashes into elephant

KUALA TERENGGANU: A man escaped unhurt after the Porsche he was driving crashed into an elephant at Kampung Kolam, Setiu, here, leaving the animal injured in one leg.

The Friday night incident, which was captured on video, saw the elephant struggling to get up from the road as other vehicles passed by.

The female elephant was captured by the Besut Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) around Telaga Papan, Setiu, yesterday afternoon.

“It was caught in an oil palm plantation, near a village, which is about 20km from the location of the accident.

“The elephant will be relocated either to Gerik, Perak or Hulu Terengganu, away from human settlements,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Setiu district police chief, Deputy Supt Afandi Husin, said the driver, Sharul Azma Che Samaon, 42, a company manager, escaped unhurt.

However, the Porsche Cayenne’s windscreen, bumpers and lights were damaged, in addition to dents in the bonnet and fenders.

Police received a call regarding the incident at 10.15pm.

“Preliminary investigations found that the accident is believed to have occurred while the victim was travelling from Rhu 10 to Lembah Bidong, and upon arrival at the location of the incident at KM45, Kampung Kolam on Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kampung Raja, did not have time to avoid the animal, which was on the road,” he said.
