Woman and son set on fire in Cheras playground, both survive with injuries

CHERAS: A foreign woman suffered burns on her face and body and her son suffered minor injuries after being doused with petrol and set on fire by two men at a playground in Kampung Cheras Baru.

Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Zam Halim Jamaluddin said they received a report regarding the incident at 1.34am last Sunday (March 10) from the victim's husband, who is also a foreigner.

The investigation found that the incident happened when the 32-year-old victim went to the playground to pick up her two-year-old son at 10.30pm last Friday (March 8).

"The victim came across two foreign men aged 26 and 35 who were drunk, and one of the suspects asked the woman to buy bottled petrol.

After the victim handed the bottle containing petrol to the suspect, they poured petrol and set the woman on fire," he said in a statement on Wednesday (March 13).

ACP Zam Halim said the victim, who was a Rohingya, suffered 30% burns to her face and body and was receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

"The victim's son suffered minor injuries in the incident.

"Further investigations are underway to identify the motive of the incident," he said, adding that the suspects had been identified and were being tracked down.

He urged anyone with information to contact the Cheras police hotline at 03-9284 5050, 03-9284 5051 or the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115 9999.
