TWO Tamil schools – SJK (T) Ladang Sungai Dingin in Kulim, Kedah, and SJK (T) Ladang Sungai Papan in Kota Tinggi, Johor – both opened the new school year with just one pupil each in Year One, Makkal Osai reported.
In the case of the Kota Tinggi school, there are only two Indian families left at the Sungai Papan estate, with no children of school-going age.
The new pupil is from the Orang Asli community.
As for Sungai Dingin, the school is located in what was formerly known as Dublin Estate. The school’s remote location is among the factors that led to its dwindling student enrolment.
However, the biggest Tamil school in the country, SJK (T) Simpang Lima, welcomed 205 pupils into Year One.
A special ceremony was held at the school, which is located in Klang, Selangor.
Overall, the school has 1,550 students and 85 teachers.
It also greeted 50 children in its preschool with welcoming gifts.
