KOTA KINABALU: A health department officer has been fined RM240,670 after he was found guilty of abusing his position to secure contracts for his own company.
Special Corruption Court Judge Jason Juga found Henry Uning, a 45-year-old assistant health officer with the Papar district health office, guilty of 20 charges under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.
Uning was accused of using his position to ensure his company – Riched Enterprise – to be selected as a supplier for events under the health district office between June 16, 2013 and March 31, 2016.
His company was picked to supply food and beverages at various meetings and activities, as well as providing services such as minor repair works at Biau Papar Rural Clinic, printers and office supplies amounting to RM30,793.
For 15 of the charges, Uning was slapped with a fine of RM10,000 for each charge while the remaining five charges, he was fined RM16,995, RM17,250, RM22,550, RM11,250 and RM22,625 respectively.
He also faces a jail term of between three months to a year if he fails to pay the fines.
The court allowed bail pending an appeal within 14 days.
