Foreigners barred from running stalls at Ramadan, Aidilfitri bazaars in Johor

JOHOR BARU: Local councils in Johor are on the lookout for foreigners operating stalls in Ramadan and Aidilfitri bazaars, says state executive councillor Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.

The Johor housing and local government committee chairman said local councils, especially those in the Greater Johor Baru area, are keeping a close eye on the matter.

"Local councils will not and have never given licenses to foreigners to run businesses.

"Those who come across foreigners, including Rohingya, operating stalls in any bazaar should report the matter to the authorities," he said after visiting a Ramadan bazaar at Bandar Baru Uda here on Tuesday (March 12).

"We have received complaints about this in previous years, but the number is small.

"Local councils will buck up enforcement to address this issue and stern action will be taken against those involved," he said, adding that this would include seizing items used by the illegal traders.

Mohd Jafni also said that the 16 local authorities in Johor have approved a total of 9,769 lots in 182 Ramadan bazaars statewide.

"Some 1,904 lots have also been approved for Aidilfitri bazaars in 25 locations," he said.
