GEORGE TOWN: A total of 16 projects, out of the current 746 by the Public Works Department (JKR) nationwide, that have been categorised as "sick" projects, says Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

Ahmad said the sick projects are equivalent to 2.14% of the total of projects under the supervision of the ministry.

He added that sick projects meant that the projects were more than 60 days late.

"Among the reasons for the projects to be categorised as sick were the Covid-19 pandemic, shortages of construction materials and contractors facing financial difficulties," he said on Thursday (Mac 7)

Ahmad said on average, each state had between one and two troubled projects, experiencing delays exceeding two months or 20% delay from the implementation schedule.

He said the ongoing construction supervised by JKR doesn't solely focus on buildings as it also involves the construction of bridges, highways, roads, and slopes.

He said according to last month's statistics, the percentage of sick projects was 2.88%, compared to the current 2.14%.

Ahmad Maslan said this after inspecting the upgrading and conservation project of the 119-year-old Penang High Court, which incurred a total cost of RM17.9mil.
