MELAKA: A 40-year-old unemployed man claimed trial to eight charges of threatening to set his mother on fire, injuring his wife and exposing his genitals to his daughters.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges which were read to him at the Sessions Court here on Thursday (March 7) before two separate judges - Judge Azaraorni Abd Rahman and Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah.

For the first three charges, the accused allegedly exposed his genitals to three of his daughters aged 12, 14 and 16 at a house in Taman Merlimau Baru, Jasin at about 10pm on Feb 26.

The charges were framed under Section 15(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

If convicted under the Act, the accused could face a maximum 10-year jail sentence, a maximum fine of RM20,000 or both.

The accused was also charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation for allegedly threatening to set his 63-year-old mother on fire.

The Section carries a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment, a fine or both upon conviction.

The accused also faced four more charges for allegedly causing injuries to his 41-year-old wife and three daughters at the same place, time and location as his previous offences.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 326A of the same Code that carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine or both upon conviction.

The prosecutions were carried out by Deputy Public Prosecutors Najwa Nazari and Muhammad Nazrin Ali Rahim, while the accused was unrepresented.

Both courts refused to grant bail and fixed April 22 as the next mention date.
