Nine rescued in waters off Semporna

KOTA KINABALU: Nine people, including three children, have been rescued after the fishing boat they were on capsized when it was hit by large waves.

They were identified as Mohammad Maleh Muhammad Husin, 43, Norfidah Safri, 43, Nurul Qasibah Mohammad Maleh, 18, Justina Buglayan, 41, and Hasalinah Buglayan, 37, as well as Sahura Safri, 39.

The children are Irman Elman and Nur Khayla Abdullah, both two years old, and five-year-old Nurul Wafiyyah Jasimu.

The incident happened in Tobo-Tobo Island waters off Sabah’s east coast Semporna district at about 3.45pm on Monday.

Semporna Fire and Rescue’s water station chief Noor Jali Maslah said they deployed a Kevlar boat on being alerted of the incident.

“On reaching the location, we found the boat was already submerged.

“Nine people were rescued,” he said when contacted.

He added that the people have returned to their homes in Sumande Island.
