Elderly woman nabbed for driving against traffic


JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested an elderly woman for allegedly driving against traffic at KM9 of Jalan Johor Baru-Ayer Hitam here.

Johor Baru Utara district police chief, ACP Balveer Singh said they had identified a 13-second clip on X (formerly Twitter) that went viral, showing a grey Honda Civic car being driven against traffic in an incident that occurred between midnight and 2.50am on Friday.

“Acting on information, at 4.11pm, we detained a 75-year-old female suspect to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement, noting that the woman was taken into custody after she was summoned to the Iskandar Puteri police station.

An initial investigation indicated she was not under the influence of alcohol, however, she might have dementia, ACP Balveer said, as reported by Bernama.

According to him, the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act, which carries a maximum imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to RM15,000.
