Train crashes into wall at Sembulan railway station due to system malfunction

KOTA KINABALU: A locomotive ploughed into the wall at the end of the Sembulan railway station due to a system malfunction.

The incident happened at 7.08am, on Saturday (March 2).

Sabah Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said the locomotive was attached to four passenger carriages, and it was travelling from Beaufort to Sembulan.

"When the locomotive approached the Sembulan station, there was a system malfunction which resulted in the brakes not working," he said in a statement.

"The train had to crash into the bumper stopper at the end of the railway and hit its wall as well," he said.

No one was injured, added Shahelmey.

He said the four-passenger carriages were later attached to another locomotive to continue its journey scheduled elsewhere.

"No rail service was affected from this incident," he said, adding the faulty locomotive sustained damage to its bogie component, brakes and buffer, among other things," he said.

Investigations into this matter will be carried out to prevent similar incidents, Shahelmey said.
