Senior citizen arrested over viral video of a car driving against traffic


JOHOR BARU: A senior citizen has been arrested to assist in the investigation of a viral video showing a car driving against traffic.

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said the 75-year-old woman was arrested at about 4.11pm on Friday (March 1).

"We have detected a 13-second video on X where a grey car was seen driving against traffic flow.

"Following further information, we have arrested a 75-year-old woman to assist in investigations," he said in a statement here on Friday.

He added that based on interrogation, the woman is suspected to have dementia.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of not more than five years and a fine of RM5,000 to RM15,000 upon conviction.

"We urge the public not to make any speculations and to leave the matter to the police," he said.

Video of the incident has been making rounds on social media. In the video, a car can be seen driving against traffic flow with its emergency lights on.
