1MDB trial adjourned as lead counsel Shafee falls sick

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here adjourned Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial as his lead counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, was unwell.

The court was informed by Muhammad Shafee’s co-counsellor, Tania Scivetti, that the senior lawyer had heart palpitations.

Scivetti said Muhammad Shafee could not attend court and requested for the proceedings to be adjourned for the day.

“Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee is unwell and he is going to see his doctor for his condition; he is having palpitations but hopefully he’ll be well enough to attend proceedings tomorrow (Feb 28),” Scivetti said yesterday.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib did not object to the request and suggested new dates to replace yesterday’s trial in March (14, 15 and 27) as well as on April 1 to 5.

Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah agreed to the dates. The trial will continue today.

Najib, 70, is facing four charges of using his position to obtain bribes totalling RM2.28bil from 1MDB funds and 21 charges of money laundering involving the same amount.
