‘Local crops, food supplies unaffected by El Nino’


SHAH ALAM: Local crops and food supplies are unaffected by the hot weather conditions and the El Nino phenomenon, the government has assured.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the ministry will, however, continue to monitor the situation as the phenomenon is expected to become more critical next year.

He advised farmers, fishermen and livestock breeders to take precautions while out in the field, Bernama reported.

“This dry weather will go on for a long period, and the group (farmers, fishermen and breeders) must comply with the instructions from the authorities, including the Health Ministry,” he told reporters in Section 27 here yesterday.

He added that the ministry was scheduled to meet the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry next week to discuss the dry season.

Meteorological Department director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said that the El Nino phenomenon, which is currently affecting the world with strong intensity, was expected to continue until mid-year.
