Orang utan body found floating on river in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The body of an orang utan was found floating down the Kinabatangan river, according to a posting on social media.

Facebook user Addy Samsudin posted videos of the efforts to recover the body of the orang utan.

Wildlife officials confirmed the recovery of the body but declined to comment further.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Augsutine Tuuga could not be reached for details of the incident, which is believed to have occurred yesterday.

Based on the video shared on Facebook page, conservationists estimated that the orang utan was a male in its late teens or early 20s.

They explained that it was not uncommon for orang utan to fall off the trees into the river and drown especially when the river is swollen.

Orang utans are not known to be swimmers.

However, only a post-mortem could confirm the cause of its death.
