Chinese tourist hurt in fall near Mount Kinabalu checkpoint

KOTA KINABALU: A Chinese tourist has sustained head injuries in a fall while hiking down Mount Kinabalu.

Chen Jiqing, 43, was reported to have slipped and fallen near the Sayat-Sayat hut, the first checkpoint going down the summit, early on Monday (Feb 12).

“He hit his head on the ground, resulting in bleeding from the back of his head and ears,” Sabah and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Hamsa Isnurdini said in a statement.

He said auxiliary firemen, mountain guides and Sabah Parks search and rescue members carried Chen down after getting an emergency call at 7.35am.

“Chen was handed over to medical officials in a waiting ambulance once they reached the base,” he said.

The tourist was later taken to the hospital for further treatment and on-site operations ceased at 1.35pm, said Hamsa.
