Water polluters may face stiffer punishments

HEFTIER punishments of up to 15 years’ jail and fines of up to RM15mil for water polluters are among the proposed amendments to the Water Services Industry Act 2006, reported Berita Harian.

The stiffer penalties proposed by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) would be a huge increase from the RM500,000 fine and maximum 10 years’ jail term currently provided for in the Act.

SPAN chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Faizal Abdul Rahman said the amendments are expected to be tabled in the next Parliament sitting in June.

“Currently, the draft of the amendments is at the Attorney General’s Chambers before being presented to the Cabinet. The amendments would be able to play the more stringent and pivotal role of teaching offenders a lesson,” he said.

According to Section 121(2)(b) of the Act, if found guilty, the offender shall be liable to imprisonment of not more than 10 years, or a fine not exceeding RM500,000, or caning, or all three.

> Actress Datin Elvina Mohamad has rejected claims that her marriage is on the rocks due to her rarely sharing photos of her husband on social media.

Kosmo! reported Elvina as saying that she merely wanted privacy and did not want to put her happiness on display.

“I don’t like to share stuff about my husband and children on social media. Let the sweet memories be known only by us. Not everyone likes to see us happy.

“I only use Instagram for work now. I used to be excited to share with fans, but as we get older, privacy is very important and not everything needs to be shown to the public,” she said.
