MMEA recovers 20kg of suspected stolen shellfish seeds


PETALING JAYA: Around 20kg of shellfish seeds were found by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) after two suspects escaped.

In a statement on Saturday (Feb 10), Selangor MMEA director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said that the agency patrol boat was performing enforcement patrols near the Kuala Selangor jetty at around 2.15pm on Feb 9 when they noticed two men acting suspiciously.

"The two men ran away after spotting the patrol vessel approaching them. They left behind two sacks on the jetty.

"Inspections showed that the sacks contained around 20kg of shellfish seeds with an estimated value of RM2,000. It is believed that the sacks were stolen," he said.

He added that taking shellfish seeds from natural habitats violates the Fisheries Act 1985.
