KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 6,559 officers and personnel will be deployed nationwide for Ops Selamat over the Chinese New Year period from Feb 8 to 13.
"We will take enforcement action on traffic infringements and give the best services to society.
"We will also conduct crime prevention activities during the festivities," said Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department (JSPT) director Comm Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri during RTM's Selamat Pagi Malaysia programme on Tuesday (Feb 6).
Comm Mohd Azman said police expect an increase of vehicles on the road as many would be returning home for the holidays.
"We will deploy sufficient personnel to ensure smooth traffic flow. Officers will also be placed at traffic congestion hotspots and blackspots where accidents often occur," he said.
A total of 407 hotspots and 86 blackspots have been identified, Comm Mohd Azman said.
"For highways and expressways, 18 hotspots and 46 blackspots have been identified," he added.
Comm Mohd Azman said the leave for officers and personnel involved in Ops Selamat have been frozen.
"The crime prevention department and community safety department, through its mobile patrol unit and motorcycle patrol unit, as well as the air unit are also involved in the operation," he said.
Comm Mohd Azman said police are working closely with its strategic partner PLUS Malaysia Berhad, the Malaysia Highway Authority, the Road Transport Department and the Red Crescent.
"We are also placing emergency response teams at strategic locations," he added.
He also reminded the public to ensure their vehicles are in good condition and to make ample preparation before starting their journey.
"Get enough rest before starting your journey. Stick to the speed limit for your own safety and other road users," he said.
