GEORGE TOWN: The entire Gurney Bay project costs RM247mil, said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow in response to allegations that the amount was only for Phase One, which was opened to the public on Feb 4.

Chow also said that the project’s contractor was still responsible for any defects.

“As of Dec 31, 2023, the state government has only paid RM58mil for the completed work. The RM247mil will only be spent when all components of the project are completed by 2026,” Chow said in a statement as reported by Bernama.

“As for defects at the site, the contractor is responsible for two years under the defect liability period condition,” he said.

Chow opened Phase 1 of Gurney Bay to the public and described it as a seaside recreational park suitable for the whole family.

In a Facebook post, Chow’s predecessor Lim Guan Eng had questioned the quality of work at the park, which is already showing defects.

“The RM247 million spent should bring an international-standard recreational park,” said Lim, who is also the Air Putih assemblyman.
