Taking up Najib's debate challenge a waste of time, says Ramkarpal

PETALING JAYA: Taking up Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's challenge for a debate is senseless and a waste of time, says Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh.

He said any debate, whether with him or anyone else, would not change the fact that Najib remains a convict and that his conviction is safe.

"It was brought to my attention that Najib, through his Facebook page, has challenged me to a debate saying his team will reach out to me for a suitable date and venue," Ramkarpal said in a statement Monday (Feb 5).

"As far as I know, no one from Najib's camp has contacted me. To debate his unnamed representative on an issue that has already been decided is pointless," he added.

Ramkarpal said the Pardons Board had maintained Najib's conviction, and it would be wise of the former prime minister to stop challenging people to a debate, the outcome of which makes no difference to his situation.

"I will not allow myself to be used (for a) cheap publicity stunt," added Ramkarpal.

It was reported earlier that Najib had challenged Ramkarpal and other "haters" to an open debate on the RM42mil SRC International case.

This followed Ramkarpal's statement on Saturday (Feb 3) that the recent reduction of Najib's jail sentence by the Pardons Board from 12 years to six, and his fine from RM210mil to RM50mil, was not adequate given the gravity of his crime.
