New Perak water tariffs to be made known in March, says MB

IPOH: The new water tariff rates for Perak are expected to be announced in March, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad (pic).

The Perak Mentri Besar said the state Water Board will meet on March 1 and for a briefing on the new rates.

"The board will have to be briefed on the rationale for the new rates, whether or not it will be profitable, loss-making, or a burden on the people.

"After the board meets, the matter will then be raised at the state exco meeting," he told a press conference after a course for state village development and safety committee chairmen here on Thursday (Feb 1).

"An announcement will be made after the exco meeting, expected to be held on March 6," he added.

Saarani said there will be an increase but gave an assurance that it would not burden the people.

He said the last time the water tariffs were increased was in 2006.

"We need to take this opportunity ... If not, we will have to wait until the next time the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) gives its permission (to increase tariffs and) we do not know when (that will be)," he said.
