GEORGE TOWN: Work to connect the two 600mm pipes across Sungai Perai to replace the leaking pipeline at the bottom of the river was completed early Wednesday (Jan 31).

Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP), in a statement, said work to connect the two pipes started at 11.30pm Tuesday (30 Jan) and was scheduled to take 16 hours, but was completed earlier.

"Following that, restoration of water supply to 84% of the 120,000 affected consumers in parts of the Timur Laut and Barat Daya districts can begin earlier and is targeted to be completed by 3.30pm Thursday (Feb 1).

"The remaining 16% of consumers, including those residing at the end of the distribution line (EoL) and higher areas are expected to get their supply at 3.30pm on Friday (Feb 2)," read the statement.

The incident of a pipe leakage at the bottom of Sungai Perai last Tuesday was the third such occurence.

The first was in December last year, followed by the second on Jan 12.

Following several incidents of major pipes leaking, the Penang government implemented a temporary pipe installation across Sungai Perai, expected to function for at least eight months while waiting for the new permanent pipe replacement project at the bottom of Sungai Perai to be ready. - Bernama
