HKL investigating alleged patient death linked to faulty ventilator


KUALA LUMPUR: Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) is investigating claims that a patient's death was linked to a faulty ventilator.

"HKL would like to inform (the public) that the incident reported on Jan 27 regarding the issue of a patient being treated with a ventilator is still being investigated by the hospital.

"The hospital, along with its concessionaire companies, constantly ensures that the medical equipment used to treat patients is monitored and serviced according to schedule to ensure quality health service is administered to patients.

"Any medical treatment complications that affect the safety of patients will be investigated via the incident reporting system as stated in the... guidelines of the Health Ministry," HKL director Datin Paduka Dr Rohana Johan said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 28).

Previously, an online news outlet reported that a patient from a Klang Valley-based hospital had died after being found unconscious, with responding medical officers finding that the ventilator had apparently failed.

It was also alleged that a second patient was declared brain dead for similar reasons.
