Man falls to death in drug raid

Fatal chase: Authorities recover the body of a Nigerian man who fell to his death while avoiding arrest.

GEORGE TOWN: A desperate attempt to escape a police narcotics raiding team proved fatal for a Nigerian man, who fell from the 16th floor of a condominium block in Batu Uban here.

He died on the spot.

Police recovered an undisclosed amount of ecstasy pills and methamphetamine (syabu) from the rented unit on the 16th floor of the block.

Two other Nigerians, believed to be his accomplices, were arrested in the 6pm incident on Sunday.

One of them was picked up in the unit while the other was caught along the corridor on the 8th floor of the block.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Razlam Ab Hamid said police raided the unit following a public tip-off on drug-related activities.

He said when the raiding team knocked on the door, a man came out. “After realising it was the police, he went in again and locked the door,” said ACP Razlam.

He said the police had no choice but to break into the unit.

He also said the police are investigating whether the suspects are part of a drug syndicate.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, while the incident of the deceased man has been classified as sudden death pending a further probe.
