Five deny cheating man with fake loan plan

PORT DICKSON: Five people, including a couple, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here to a charge of cheating using a non-existent online loan scheme.

Lee Jia Re, 23, Jason Lee Lian Sheng, 25, Jass Lee Ying Xing, 19, Amiratul Najihah Abdul Malik, 21, and Kamarul Nazrin Kamarulzaman, 29, claimed trial after the charge was read to them before magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani.

The five were jointly charged with cheating a 35-year-old man by inducing him to deposit RM3,897 into an account on the pretext of getting a loan that does not exist.

The offence was allegedly committed on Nov 11 last year at a resort here.

The suspects were charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same legislation, which provides a jail term of between one and 10 years, whipping, and a fine if found guilty.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadia Ezzati Mohd Zainal then asked the court for a date to mention the case and proposed bail be set at RM8,000 for each suspect.

However, the court fixed bail at RM3,500 in one surety for each suspect and fixed Feb 20 for mention.

Lawyer Alvin Tan Keng Yi represented all five accused.
