QuickCheck: Is it true that a road in Pahang where a large sinkhole appeared is now open to traffic?

WHETHER true or false, news of routes opening tend to spread rapidly and go viral easily – especially among those who might find their travel easier thanks to it.

Recently, it was claimed in a viral WhatsApp message that a federal route from Kuantan in Pahang where a large sinkhole appeared to Segamat in Johor is now open to all road users.

Is this true?

VERDICT:

FALSE

The Pahang Public Works Department (JKR) has refuted the viral information on WhatsApp that claims Federal Route FT12, from Kuantan to Segamat at KM72 has been opened and can be accessed.

In a Facebook post on Sunday (Jan 14), Pahang JKR said that the route remains closed, consistent with the road closure notice issued earlier by the Pekan JKR and the installation of a bailey bridge at the site of the road collapse is still in progress

"The dirt road beside the bailey bridge is only temporary, built over the collapsed embankment to facilitate ongoing site work and is considered unsafe for road users. As such, JKR will not be responsible for any incidents that may occur to road users," it said in the post.

In addition, JKR also said it would report any dissemination of false information to authorities and advised the public not to propagate false information.
