Hapless worker killed by falling furniture in Sandakan

KOTA KINABALU: A worker who was removing furniture from an overturned lorry was killed when it fell on him.

The incident occurred at Batu 17, Labuk road in Sandakan yesterday.

Sandakan fire station chief Mohd Nidzam Sainku said they received a distress call at 10.02am, but on arrival, members of the public had already removed the furniture from the man, identified as Nawawi. The firemen were told by witnesses that the victim, who was in his 20s, was hit by the furniture while he was transferring the goods.

Firemen handed the body over to the police for further action.

Mohd Nidzam said the accident involving the lorry was believed to have occurred on Saturday and the owner had sent workers to remove the furniture from the overturned vehicle.

It is understood that the driver and his attendant were not hurt in the accident.Separately, a motorcyclist was killed on the spot after he was involved in a crash with a 10-tonne lorry and a car in Kampung Limatok along the state’s northern Kota Belud-Tuaran road, about 60km from here.

The 24-year-old motorcyclist, who sustained multiple bodily injuries, was confirmed dead by a medical officer at the scene of the accident at around 8.50pm on Saturday.

Kota Belud district police chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said initial investigations found that the motorcyclist was overtaking a lorry and collided with an oncoming car. The impact threw the motorcyclist to the front side of the lorry.

Supt Shahrudin said the lorry, driven by a 37-year-old man, could not avoid the motorcyclist and hit him during the incident.

He said the car was driven by a 63-year-old man and both men were not injured in the accident. He added that investigations were continuing under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
