Illegal fishing boat detained by MMEA off Selangor waters


PETALING JAYA: An illegal fishing vessel stopped by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) off Sungai Besar on Saturday (Jan 6) was crewed by foreigners.

MMEA Selangor director Maritime Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 7) that the boat was crewed by five Myanmar nationals aged between 16 and 46 and that they were paid RM1,000 a month and a commission based on their catch.

He added that the suspects were found to have no valid identification documents as well.

"Around 300kg of fish were found during the check. The vessel and its crew have been brought to the Pulau Indah maritime police jetty and handed over to the investigating officer for further action," he said.
