Govt urged to strengthen key institutions for the good of all

PETALING JAYA: The G25 civil society group has called for a more transparent and proactive government when engaging with the public on matters of public interest, including the eradication of poverty and bridging income inequality.

“We hope to see an action plan by the government, especially in the economic sector, for the betterment of all levels of society.

“We also aspire for Malaysia to be free from corruption, injustice and disharmony.

“Towards this end, we must ensure the strengthening, independence and transparency of our key institutions of governance to help keep the social malaise in check.

“The country’s leaders must place emphasis on these efforts for democracy to work well and allow Malaysia to progress further on upholding human rights and individual freedoms,” it said in a statement.

It added that increased confidence in institutions of governance would bode well for confidence in the economy.

The G25 also said it looks forward to welcoming 2024, hoping that the new year will further strengthen the country as a multiracial, multi-religious and multicultural society.

“We look forward to a more prosperous, united and harmonious nation under the rule of the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong based on the fundamental principles of constitutional monarchy as enshrined in the Constitution,” it said.

G25 also said it would continue to support the government in its efforts to develop the country to become one of the most successful among developing nations and ultimately, a developed nation.

It also wished for greater emphasis on improving and strengthening the education system to respond to disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and to address the myriad global challenges facing the world.

“We urge the government to engage different stakeholders before making any significant decisions that may affect our children’s education.

“Raising the quality of education including inculcating critical thinking and English language proficiency in national schools is imperative for higher education, employability and the future of the nation,” it added.
