Viral video of congestion at airport is an old one, says Immigration DG

PETALING JAYA: A video showing congestion at the airport due to the influx of Chinese tourists is from 2022, says the Immigration Department.

Department director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said the video was recorded at the bus departure hall at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, Johor Baru, when the borders were opened to international tourists after the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The video was a recording of Malaysians returning home from Singapore, and the department denies it was taken at the international airport," said Ruslin in a statement on Sunday (Dec 24).

"According to records, the average number of those who enter and leave the country through Bangunan Sultan Iskandar is 250,000 daily and the number increases during festive seasons.

Ruslin urged the people not to spread unverified information, which could lead to confusion and uneasiness.

The Immigration Department advised people to follow its official social media to get the accurate and latest information on the department.
