Awards spur student on next step of her journey

JOHOR BARU: Winning the Johor University Student Icon (Ikon Siswa Johor) Award was a sweet ending to Nur Raudhatul Jannah Abdul Rahman’s tertiary studies journey.

The 23-year-old woman, who is currently in the final semester of her accounting degree at the Segamat branch of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), beat more than 100 undergraduates statewide to clinch the award.

“It was quite unexpected as there were many other active and capable peers vying for the award. I was moved to tears when I got on stage with my parents to receive the award from Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

“It was a sweet memory to take with me as I enter the workforce for my internship at an auditing firm next year,” said an elated Nur Raudhatul after the awards ceremony at a hotel here on Monday night.

Nur Raudhatul also won the best leader category during the awards. The two awards earned her RM3,000 in total.

She felt that her hard work and participation in academic and non-academic activities in the past five years had won her the awards.

Among her achievements was heading the Johor university students ambassador project under Yayasan Pelajaran Johor (YPJ), which gives disabled persons the chance to learn spa and sauna skills.

She was also the programme director for last year’s Johor University Student Icon Award and Segamat UiTM Gerakan Mahasiswa Anak Johor president.

“I have always put my studies first, which made it easy for me to allocate time for other activities. Time management is key.

“I am also thankful that my parents have been supportive all the way and have never stopped me from participating in various programmes,” said Nur Raudhatul, who is the fourth of six children.

A total of 48 candidates were shortlisted for the award’s group and individual categories to recognise deserving university students.

Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz in his speech said the state would continue supporting university students in hopes that they return and contribute to Johor’s development.
