DUE to the seriousness of cyberbullying on social media, a specific law is being considered to address the issue, says Teo Nie Ching.
Stressing the gravity, especially among youths, the Deputy Communications and Digital Minister highlighted the need for discussions with stakeholders to determine the appropriate ministry for proposing the legislation in Parliament.
Teo said this in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN-Masjid Tanah) during Question Time on whether the ministry was prepared to enact a specific anti-bullying law to address the issue of cyberbullying more effectively.
Citing a report from the United Nations Children’s Fund, she said that Malaysia ranked second in Asia in 2020 for cyberbullying among youths.
According to Teo, 1,147 cyberbullying and harassment content was removed between Jan 1 and Nov 15, through collaboration with authorities like the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and social media platforms.
TikTok had the highest content removal at 804, followed by Facebook (195), with others contributing to the total.
