Melaka records 211 abuse cases as of Oct 31 this year

THERE were 211 abuse cases between January and Oct 31 this year in Melaka, an increase of 94 from the 117 cases recorded last year, the state assembly was told.

State Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Datuk Kalsom Nordin said a report from the Social Welfare Department found that the negligence of parents or guardians was the main factor.

“Another contributing factor is family disputes as a result of financial problems. However, as of Oct 31, there have been no cases of abuse involving death,” she was quoted by Bernama as telling Siti Faizah Abdul Azis (BN-Sungai Rambai) during the state assembly sitting yesterday.

Earlier, Kalsom said the state government through the Social Welfare Department had channelled RM200 in one-off assistance to the next-of-kin of its aid recipients.

Siti Faizah had asked if the state government had any plans to provide funeral expense benefits for recipients under the department.

“Among the criteria (for the assistance) are that the deceased was born in Melaka and died in the state or abroad, or that the deceased had resided in Melaka for at least 10 years, which would require confirmation from the Village Development and Security Committee,” she said.

Earlier, state Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman said Melaka had spent RM5mil for the Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM24) promotion and publicity campaign, including advertising in print and electronic media.

Abdul Razak said 76 events had also been lined up in conjunction with TMM24, such as the Hot Air Balloon Carnival, Bendang Nusantara and art fashion.
