Kemaman fishermen want deeper estuary

KEMAMAN: Fishermen at Pantai Tanjung Kemasik want their new Kemaman MP to deepen a river estuary that has been critical to their trade, saying that shallow waters are threatening to damage their boats and livelihood.

Fisherman Zuaimi Mat Ali, 59, said for the past five years, it had been increasingly difficult to go out to sea or land their catch in Tanjung Kemasik after the Sungai Kemasik estuary became shallower.“When the water recedes, we have problems taking our boats out to sea and when we want to land our catch, we have to anchor far from the beach, at the end of the breakwater, so as to not risk damaging our boats if we enter the shallow water,” he told Bernama at a fishing village here.

According to Zuami, the breakwater project implemented by the state government failed to solve the problem.
