Sabah's Tropical Rainforest Run taking place on Nov 26

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's Tropical Rainforest Run 2023 is being held once again, this time taking place at the Tawau Hills Park on Nov 26.

Themed "Run among the tallest tropical trees in the world", participants will run between towering Yellow Meranti trees (Shorea faguetiana), which are among the world's tallest tropical trees.

The site is also where the second tallest Yellow Meranti tree in the country is located, which stands at a height of 99.2m.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew said they expect over 250 participants from Malaysia and also Kenya, Australia, Canada, Japan, Indonesia and Singapore.

Liew said that they hoped to make the run an annual event as it was important to raise awareness about rainforest conservation and emphasise the biodiversity present in the Tawau Hills Park ecosystem.

"To contribute to the park's preservation, 10% of the entry fees will be contributed to support conservation projects in collaboration with Sabah Parks," Liew said.

The event is co-sponsored by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry and the state Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, Sabah Tourism Board and Tourism Malaysia together with organisers Sabah Parks, Tawau Municipal Council and Tawau Runners Club with their partners Life Water Marketing Sdn Bhd, Borneo Royale Hotel and PMG Pharmacy Tawau.

Participants have two routes to choose from – the 21km Tropical Rainforest trail or the family-friendly 6km Sulphurous Springs fun run, with cash prizes worth a total of RM50,000 up for grabs
