GEORGE TOWN: A former army bunker which served as a barricade for the British army during World War II at Permatang Tepi Laut, Batu Maung, has been damaged after coming into contact with sea waves.

The small fort was built by the British army along the Penang coastal area to prevent the Japanese army from invading the territory.

The historic structure was built in the early 1940s.

During WWII, the British army had constructed hundred of forts along the coastal areas of Malaya which was then under British occupation.

This was done for defence purposes, in anticipation of the arrival of the Japanese army.
