KOTA KINABALU: A man went missing and another drowned while attempting to evade capture during a chase between the victims and marine officials in Semporna district.
The two victims were among four people in a vessel pursued by marine officials in waters off Nusakuya on Friday. Officials arrested one of the remaining two, while another escaped.
According to Sabah Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Hamsa Isnurdini, the vessel these four men were on overturned when it was struck by high waves during the chase.
He said firemen received a call about a missing person after the incident at 2.19pm.
“We were told that a man had gone missing during the marine operations at sea while another died,” Hamsa said in a statement.
He said, according to marine officials, they were chasing the boat for inspection prior to the incident.
“When strong waves hit, the boat overturned, throwing all four men in the vessel overboard,” he said.
Hamsa said one of the suspects was nabbed by marine officials, while another managed to escape in another vessel.
“Marine officials later recovered the victim who drowned and alerted us about the missing person.”
