‘Look into Sabah road designs for safety’

KOTA KINABALU: Immediate measures must be taken by the government to ensure the safety of motorists, especially at U-turns and T-junctions along main roads, says Moyog assemblyman Datuk Darell Leiking.

He said it was high time for both federal and state governments to have a look at road designs in Sabah, especially at U-turns and T-junctions, where numerous accidents have occurred.

He was commenting on last Sunday’s fatal accident in which a couple was killed at the U-turn along Jalan Pintas in Penampang in an accident involving their car and a pick-up truck.

Leiking said immediate safety measures on the roads, especially at U-turns, were needed, firstly by installing speed breakers and warning signs.

“Secondly, by ensuring all streetlights within 500m of any such U-turn are functioning all the time,” the Parti Warisan vice-president said yesterday.

He said the state government should work together with the police, Public Works Department and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd for quick solutions to the issue.

As a long-term solution, Leiking suggested building elevated U-turns for the overall safety of motorists.

“With our government rushing to complete the Pan Borneo Highway, these safety measures are needed more than ever,” he added.

Last weekend, Peter John Lo, 69, and his wife Flovia Vinison, 63, who were on their way home after a family birthday party, died on the spot after their car was hit by an oncoming pick-up truck.

The truck driver also suffered injuries.
