THE first ever women’s Silambam competition organised by the Malaysia Silamba Kalzhagam’s Selangor chapter attracted nine teams representing seven districts in the state, Malaysia Nanban reported.
The competition, which was held at the handball stadium in Section 19, Shah Alam, saw female exponents of the ancient Indian martial art go head to head in combat, solo skills, team competitions and other categories.
The team from Hulu Langat emerged overall champions with seven gold, two silver, and six bronze medals.

The launch at the Sri Balathandayuthapani Temple in Seremban had MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan as the special guest.
Writer M. Karunakaran, who gave the introductory speech, said the book of poems titled Yazhin Mouna Mozhi is a tribute to leaders, poets and writers from India, Malaysia and Singapore from the last 60 years.
The event was organised by MIC Negri Sembilan in collaboration with state Indian NGOs.
