Saifuddin: Govt serious about resolving rookie cops’ pay issue

PUTRAJAYA: Efforts will be made to address the salary issue that causes new police personnel to fall in the B40 category, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The Home Minister said he was aware of the matter, which had been discussed internally.

“For sure, we will find ways and means to rectify this,” he said when met at the ministry’s monthly assembly here on Thursday (Oct 12).

Asked if the salary issue would be addressed in Budget 2024, Saifuddin said the ministry would need to look into this as next year’s expenditure application had already been made.

“I don’t want to make a premature announcement, but we will look at our proposals after the Budget has been tabled,” he added.

Bukit Aman CID chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain recently said that with a starting salary of just RM1,441 a month, new police personnel fall under the B40 category.

He said the situation was exacerbated for recruits sent to big cities such as Kuala Lumpur.

“Their salary scale is in such a sad state. With allowances, it comes up to RM1,800.

“However, their take-home pay is only RM1,500. Can you survive with such a salary in Kuala Lumpur? Other expenses such as medical costs have not been factored in,” he said in a video shown to CID chiefs nationwide at Universiti Sains Malaysia recently.
