Police nab 200 taking part in illegal racing

GEORGE TOWN: Two hundred people taking part in illegal racing around Gelugor here were arrested by the police.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the 180 men and 20 women were detained in the wee hours of yesterday around the E-Gate area at Persiaran Tunku Kudin, Gelugor, which is considered to be a popular hotspot for illegal racing activities on the island.

“This was part of our Ops Bersepadu (Ops Samseng Jalanan). The joint ops was carried out between 11.30pm on Saturday and 4am the next morning with the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department.

“We found that a group of motorcyclists had gathered at the E-Gate area to race at around 1am.

“We then surrounded the area at 3am catching them off guard,” he said in a statement.

ACP Soffian said the motorcyclists tried to escape through the parking area of a supermarket and neighbouring buildings, but were caught by the police.

“We arrested one man for having a fake registration number and issued 126 summonses for various traffic offences, such as no side mirrors, having a modified loud exhaust, fancy number plates and tyres not in accordance with the specifications of the Road Transport Department.

“Other offences included not having a licence, expired road tax and no insurance.

“We also seized 13 motorcycles with excessive modifications,” he said.
