‘Civil service in Sabah must reflect racial makeup’

KOTA KINABALU: Recruitment for the state civil service should be done transparently and reflect the racial demographics of the people in the state, says Upko president Datuk Ewon Benedick.

He said it was important for transparency in the recruitment of new state civil servants as he had been receiving complaints that many new recruitment did not reflect the racial demographics of Sabah.

“The party supports the leadership of the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

“I hope the support given can be translated into the implementation of balanced and transparent policies, including the recruitment of state civil servants,” he told reporters yesterday.

He pointed out there were many assemblymen from the Momogun community (a broad term to refer to ethnic Kadazandusun, Murut and Rungus peoples) who fully support the leadership of the Chief Minister and the Sabah government.

But he said there was not enough recruitment from these native communities in the Sabah civil service.

“I believe this complaint was triggered based on observations in various ministries, agencies and government departments, including the recent allegation about nepotism in recruitment by the Sabah Museum.

“I will meet with the Chief Minister to discuss this matter,” said Ewon, who is Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister.
