LED lights to brighten up Tambun

IPOH: The Ipoh City Council has been allocated about RM1.1mil to replace the street lights in the Tambun constituency.

Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming said the allocation would be used to phase out sodium lamps, which were deemed not energy-efficient, and replace them with LED lights.

“About 11,000 street lights will be replaced in areas like Manjoi, Chemor, Klebang, Tanjung Rambutan, and Bandar Baru Tambun.

“About 3,000 of these lights have already been replaced,” he said in a press conference after a working visit in Tambun yesterday.

LED lights are brighter “which can lower the risk of crime and accidents and enhance public safety”, he added.

“They are energy-saving, and the city council can save up to 40% in electricity bills,” he said.

Nga also said that about 53,000 street lights in the city had been replaced with LED lights through the efforts of Tenaga Nasional Bhd.

He said that street lights nationwide would be switched to LED lights in phases.

He added that the allocation was part of an approved sum of about RM10.7mil to the city council and Perak Housing and Properties Board for upgrading and maintaining public infrastructure and replacing lifts at public flats in the state.

He also said that as of August this year, the ministry had approved a total of about RM68mil for various projects for all local governments in Perak.
