Before the planned wedding, a sad funeral for rider

PETALING JAYA: Muhamad Hafiz Muhamad Salleh was supposed to attend his younger sister’s wedding in Kedah next week. Instead, the family will be at his funeral.

The 32-year-old food delivery rider was among 10 people killed in the Shah Alam plane crash. He had been passing the area on his motorcycle when the tragedy happened.

Muhamad Hafiz was a Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) graduate and was working as a food delivery rider in Kuala Lumpur after completing his studies in 2017.

According to his cousin Nurul Nazihah, she just met Muhamad Hafiz, the eldest of five siblings, during Hari Raya Aidiladha at the end of June.

“I live in Kulim, his mother lives in Sidam. Our kampung is in Baling, all in Kedah.

“His sister’s wedding is next week. He was supposed to be back then. This is really sad,” Nurul Nazihah was quoted as saying by mStar.

She said she had seen a video of a man in flames after the crash.

“It was sad to see him burning on the road. Then, I found out it was my cousin. The police had gone to his mother’s house to tell her,” said Nurul Nazihah.

A passing lorry driver had rushed to help Muhamad Hafiz just after the crash but to no avail.

The man said he had rushed to the scene with a fire extinguisher from his lorry after he heard screams.

“I tried to approach the rider, but there were still some small explosions. I tried using the fire extinguisher but it was not enough,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

Another unfortunate victim of the crash was Grab driver Sharipuddin Shaari who had also been driving through the area at that time. The 53-year-old had not picked up a passenger since 2pm and was alone in his car.

In a Facebook post, his relative Hazwani Hamdan shared that she had known him as Pokcik Din.

“I had talked about the crash all day but I was shocked to learn that one of the victims was someone I knew,” she said.

She also posted a WhatsApp conversation between Sharipuddin and his wife where he had complained about a cut he suffered from wearing his spectacles.

They had laughed about it, with her saying he was “tough guy” and him replying that he was a “tough guy who was whining to his wife about a cut”.

Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia has extend its condolences to Sharipuddin’s family and said it would assist them.

“In addition to the insurance benefits, we will also ensure that the family receives further assistance. This will include payout from Grab Partners’ zakat wakalah fund and contributions,” it said in a statement.

Foodpanda Malaysia also expressed sadness over the death of Muhammad Hafiz.
