‘Ready to be a check and balance in Selangor assembly’

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional will play the role of a responsible Opposition in Selangor and will not oppose merely for the sake of it, says Hulu Kelang assemblyman Datuk Seri Azmin Ali (pic).

He said the coalition will continue to speak up on issues affecting the people.

Prior to the state polls on Saturday, the Selangor state assembly had seven Opposition members, including Azmin and Selangor PAS commissioner Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi Ahmad Yunus.

Perikatan managed to land 22 seats from the 56-seat state assembly in Saturday’s polling.

“We aim to be not just formidable, but a responsible Opposition in Selangor.

“The mandate secured from the rakyat must be translated into tangible initiatives that will benefit them. We have made significant progress in the state election this round because the rakyat trusts Perikatan and our manifesto.

“The check and balance that we will bring to the state assembly will certainly make Selangor great again,” said Azmin, who is also a former Selangor mentri besar.

Perikatan’s manifesto for Selangor in the state elections listed, among them, RM2bil worth of economic stimulus packages with seven pivots, 25 approaches and 112 offers based on the “New Selangor, We Rise” slogan.

Azmin, who has been touted as the next state Opposition chief, claimed that when he was the mentri besar, Selangor had reserves of RM3.62bil and allocated 52% to development alone.

“No other state had given that big a percentage for development alone,” he said, adding that mega projects in the state would also be scrutinised.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Yunus, who is Sijangkang assemblyman, said Selangor Opposition members are committed to bringing quality debates to the floor.

“The people’s representatives elected on Aug 12 are professionals and highly educated, with some having experience as ministers,” he said.
