More stalls for KK night market to boost tourism

KOTA KINABALU: More stalls will be added to the Api-Api night food market in the city centre here, says Datuk Christina Liew.

The Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister also said two more locations have been identified for new night market spots downtown.

In announcing this, she said 50 new stalls would be added to the existing 95 stalls at Api-Api market.

"At present, the Api-Api night food market only operates along Block A and Block B (of the Gaya Street area), so the new stalls will be at Block C and Block D.

"Two new night market locations have been identified at Bandaran Berjaya and D'Suang Sadong Jaya, which are expected to open at the end of August.

"The one in Bandaran Berjaya is expected to accommodate 30 stalls, while D'Suang Sadong Jaya will offer 40 stalls," she said in a statement here on Tuesday (Aug 8).

Liew said Kota Kinabalu has begun to attract visitors again with one million tourist arrivals in the first six months of 2023.

She said the new measures were announced as there was a need to offer more tourism products, especially at the city centre.

Liew added that the Bandaran Berjaya night market would include buskers' performances and will focus on food and beverages.

"The D'Suang Sadong Jaya will focus on seasonal fruits and barbeque-concept food.

"It is hoped these new market platforms will assist in improving the economy of the stall sellers while at the same time, liven up Kota Kinabalu," she added.
