MMEA arrests five for attempting to siphon subsidised diesel worth RM3.3mil

KOTA TINGGI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has arrested five men for attempting to siphon 28,000 litres of subsidised diesel worth RM3.3mil in Pasir Gudang.

Johor Maritime director First Admiral maritime Nurul Hizam Zakaria said an enforcement team from the Tanjung Sedili maritime zone was deployed to the scene after receiving a tip-off at 12.30am on Tuesday (Aug 8).

“Upon arrival, the team noticed an anchored boat and a tanker lorry in a very close position with the hose and oil pump connected to one another. Further inspection revealed that the boat was crewed by three men, including one Indonesian, all aged between 29 and 64.

“The trio failed to produce valid documentation,” he said in a statement here.

The MMEA arrested another two men, a local and a Myanmar national, both aged 48 and 58, who were inside a nearby truck and are believed to have been involved in the activity, he added.

All of the arrests were made at 3.30am.

The case is being investigated under Section 361(1) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, Regulation 18 of the Control of Supplies Act (Amendment) 2021, and Regulation 21 of the Control of Supplies Regulations 1974.
