POPULAR actress Maya Karin (pic) said she did not complete her diploma course because the lecturer kept cancelling classes, Kosmo! reported.

Her memory was sparked after reading about the case of three Sabahans who recently won a lawsuit against their absentee teacher during their secondary school days.

“I decided to quit college because of the lecturer’s poor attendance. Every time I arrived for class, there would be a note saying that the lecture had been cancelled due to the lecturer’s absence,” she said.

In the end, Maya said she made the hard decision to stop studying, preferring not to waste her time or family’s money.

The star of the hit horror movie Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam then started travelling around the world while pursuing an acting career.

> The controversial movie Pulau has earned RM700,000 in a month in Cambodia, Berita Harian reported.

The WebTV Asia production is the first Malaysian film to make it big in that country.

In fact, Pulau, directed by Euho and starring Alif Satar and Amelia Henderson, has hit No. 1 in Cambodia’s horror film chart this year.

WebTV Asia group chief executive officer Fred Chong said he is proud of the movie’s achievement.

“For a country with a population of 16.6 million, our total box-office receipts there can be considered very high,” he said.

Early this year, Pulau was heavily criticised by some social media users who found its trailer too racy for their liking.

> Veteran actress Norish Karman denied that she has had surgery to make her lips fuller, Kosmo! also reported.

She insisted that she takes after her dad where her lips are concerned.

Responding to talk that she has had Botox injections to her lips and nose to appear more radiant, Norish, whose real name is Nor’Ashikin Karman, said it’d be more worthwhile to donate the money to the needy than to spend it on cosmetic procedures.

“I don’t have money to have such an injection or go for beauty surgery.

“My nose is such as I inherited it from my mother, who is of Arab descent,” she said.

The actress, who hails from Singapore, said she is afraid of sharp things and can’t stand the pain of such operations.

“No, I am not brave enough to go under the knife.

“I’ve only gone for surgery four times – for Caesarean when giving birth to my children,” she said.
